2023 Riesling


Our 2018 Riesling was awarded 98 points by James Halliday and SOLD OUT in record time. Subsequent vintages have continued to follow suit, with Gary Walsh (The Wine Front) commenting on the 2020 that "It's one of the best Rieslings I’ve tasted in quite some time"; and then both the 2021 and 2022 vintages continuing to receive high ratings of 95 points from both the Halliday Wine Companion and The Wine Front.

One might say we've set the flavour bar quite high... so how does the 2023 version compare?

UPDATE: It turns out our 2023 Riesling has smashed it out of the park! Receiving a 98 point score from James Halliday in the Weekend Australian Top 100 wines - this is truly mind blowing stuff!

This wine is a tropical haven full of rich and multidimensional flavour. Ultra-unctuous and sensationally zingy on the palate, with aromas of both passionfruit and lemon/lime minerality. A delightful juxtaposition of sweet yet sour, but still so dry and refreshing - we are genuingely excited to see how this wine continues to evolve.

For those who are yet to taste these over the years, a quick heads up that this is not a typical Aussie Riesling. Our grapes originate from very old Tasmanian vines (planted at Meadowbank in 1974) combined with Gerald's more recently planted German Riesling clones. The cool-climate conditions that sweep through our hidden valley continue to produce fruit of exceptional taste and quality. Our winemaker, Peter Dredge, then splits these Riesling ferments between stainless steel tanks (for refined freshness) and old French oak barrels (for complexity and texture) - the final blend produces a wine where high acid and a gentle kiss of residual sugar dance together in perfect harmony. A truly captivating wine that is completely and utterly delicious.

We highly recommend grabbing a 6-pack of this wine and storing some in your cellar - you can certainly enjoy drinking it right now but as with all of our of our rieslings, they're only going to get better with age! As Tyson Stelzer previously noted - "Remarkable line and length promise grand things in decades to come." 


95 POINTS - "It’s like crunching straight into a Granny Smith apple. There’s lime there too, whispered with fruit sweetness, and notes of hay, grapefruit, florals and herbs, though it’s the apple character that drives it. At least part of this wine spent time in oak and it’s slipped with texture as a result, though it’s a minor element; the wine still cuts on through, like the glimmer of a sunrise on water, and finishes long." - Campbell Mattinson - The Wine Front.

95 POINTS - "Purity and drinkability writ large from Peter Dredge and the team at Meadowbank Wines. Light straw in colour with pure aromas of Meyer lemon, lime and peach skin with notes of crushed stone, pressed white flowers, almond paste, dried mandarin rind and liminal hints of poached pear. It's a wonderfully textural wine, playing on the tension between fruit and acidity, sapid yet expressive, enchanting at the moment with a lot of promise in the cellar." - Dave Brookes - Halliday Wine Companion.
